Abstract

Drawing on Martine Danan, who questioned the preference of dubbing over subtitling because of economic reasons, the author is convinced of the influence of nationalism on dubbing in Spain. Translation techniques in dubbing are not only influenced by linguistic considerations but also by social and cultural elements. The article discusses the emergence of spoken cinema and dubbing as a compromise, nationalism and dubbing in postwar Spain, and includes an analysis of the translation of Blood and Sand.
