Abstract

Accuracy is the common property of both semantic and communicative translation; 'free' and 'literal' translations are at least partly inaccurate, where the first make unnecessary use of synonyms and paraphrases as well as of instances of fantasy and ignorance, and the second ignore contextual meaning. The author presents a diagram of semantic and communicative translation and discusses its particular elements, pursueing his thesis that semantic translation is related more closely to thought while communicative translations is more related to speech.
