Abstract
The main focus of this paper is the so-called bilingual switch mechanism, which, in a healthy polyglot, allows him to perceive, comprehend and produce verbal information at will in two or more languages. The article looks at at past theories and observations and attempts to provide a better understanding of this process by examining both the input and output switch mechanisms and by discussing a number of possible malfunctions.
