A delimitation of computational linguistics (CL) is hard to formulate. Merely identifying CL with the computational treatment of human language is not useful: such a definition would include crude string manipulation applications as can be found in word processing, as well as results in speech processing, which should be seen as a discipline in its own right. On the other hand, a useful working definition must be broad enough to encompass theoretical contributions as well as the computational tools and techniques which have evolved in their wake.
