Tõlke ja tsensuuri alamvaldkond uurib ideoloogia äärmuslikku mõju tõlkele. Seeläbi viib selle uurimine „meid tõlketeaduse kõige tähtsamate ideoloogiliste aspektideni“ (Tymoczko, Ní Chuilleanáin et al. 2009: 45). Tsensuuri on õigustatud esteetiliste, moraalsete, poliitiliste, sõjaliste ja usuliste põhjustega ning seda on käsitletud muude vaatenurkade kõrval näiteks tähendusülekandega (transfer) seotud võrgustike, tõlkevabaduse, tõlke-eetika (ethics of translation) ning ümberkirjutamise (loovuse) ja tõlke vahelise suhte seisukohast. Alati ei ole tegemist polariseeritud must-valge olukorraga, kus süütu tõlkija on tõlkeprotsessis vastamisi repressiivse režiimiga. Kuigi tsensuuri on traditsiooniliselt peetud sunduslikuks ja mahasuruvaks nähtuseks, kus on alati rõhujad ja ohvrid, on 21. sajandi tsensuuri- ja tõlkeuuringud avardanud meie arusaama sellest keerulisest nähtusest.
