У 1970-х роках було розбудовано низку функційних (функціоналістських) підходів (Functionalist approaches) до перекладу. Панівні в 1950-х і аж до середини 1970-х років мовознавчо-орієнтовані теорії тлумачили переклад головно як передавання значення і намагалися з’ясувати, якими методами можна досягнути еквівалентності оригінального (джерельного) та перекладного (цільового) тексту. На противагу цьому, базовим принципом функційних підходів стала орієнтація на мету, якої повинен досягнути перекладний текст в культурному контексті цільової авдиторії. Переклад розглядається, перш за все, як різновид діяльності в різних контекстах та культурах.
