Abstract
The author discusses the exhibition 'Sheila Hicks: weaving as metaphor' on show at the Bard Graduate Center (12 July-15 Oct. 2006). The author states that 145 miniature woven works were displayed at the show, describes Hicks's use of a portable loom when travelling, and considers the influence of her training as a painter, and her childhood involvement in textile arts on her current work. She notes that Hicks discusses her motivations, techniques and influences in a video presentation accompanying the show, reports on the catalogue accompanying the exhibition noting that it contains detailed descriptions of each work on show, comments by the artist and essays by leading cultural theorists, and concludes by stating that Hick's small-scale works have the same mesmerizing quality as her large-scale installation works.
