Abstract
This paper focuses on the retrospective function of metaphor, i.e. its ability to model the 'majestic' and 'dreadful' past of Russia and the UK and affect the addressee by triggering the emotional state targeted by the speaker. The research is based on political advertisements used during federal elections in Russia in 2003 and elections to the parliament in the UK in 2001. According to the results of the study, the use of conceptual metaphors is a recurrent and efficient means of conceptualising and categorising the past in the political discourse.
