Abstract

This study applies conceptual metaphor theory to the analysis of business discourse. In particular, it aims to characterize the conceptual metaphors as are manifested in British and American CEO’s risk discourses and its predictive power of CEOs’ risk perceptions by the structural equation modeling method. A CEO risk discourse corpus is built containing data collected from the annual reports of 56 British and American renowned corporates of 12 different business sectors. The study identifies altogether 11 conceptual metaphors that are employed in the CEOs’ risk discourse. It further discovers that 7 of those 11 conceptual metaphors are predictive of the CEOs’ risk perceptions.
