Abstract

This article explores the relationship between metaphor and affect appraisal, arguing that the former is an indispensable mechanism for the latter. Following that, it gives a detailed analysis of the metaphors that function as affect appraisal in the real data. It is argued that the choice of the congruent form and the metaphorical form is dependent on the choice of the subjective or intersubjective perspective, and that the choice of grammatical forms is jointly determined by the affect experience and the interpersonal function. This constitutes the experiential-interpersonal motivation of affect appraisal.
