Abstract
The objective of this study is to show the way a specific TV report portrays students as being permanently aggressive and as actors who behave differently from accepted standards in society, creating an image that makes them responsible for having put a bomb in an underground station in Santiago (Chile) in 2014. The figure of the young man wearing a hood (‘encapuchado’) is portrayed as a demonstrator representing the mobilized youth, who are deprecated from the system and not included in the public section through the news story. We analyse textual and visual manners of discourse in connection with the recontextualization of reasons and actions found in the narrative structure by making use of methodologies from Critical Discourse. The findings put forward that young students wearing hoods are metaphorically manipulated to withdraw legitimate status from the entire student movement, which helps in an active way to the different branches of knowledge of Youth Studies.
