Abstract
The aim of this paper is to investigate metaphoric gestures in real-time communication, so as to provide evidence of the existence of underlying cross domain mappings. Moreover, it stresses the role of metaphoric gestures in conveying more information than the metaphoric speech alone. Gestures are examined in face-to-face conversations. It suggested that metaphoric gestures reflect the embodied nature of conceptual metaphors and carry an independent meaning relative to the speaker’s focus of attention in real-time communication.
