Abstract

This paper investigates three figures of thought, namely similes, comparisons, and likeness in Homeric poems. Adopting a psycholinguistic perspective, the author aims to give an explanation of the frequent use of “A (is) like B” constructions, particularly used for the description of figures in Homeric texts, and to explore the rhetorical needs that are met. Pertaining to previous research, special focus is given to features depicting likeness between tenor and vehicle.
