Abstract
The current paper deals with the representation of national identity by means of a popular Greek television comedy analysis, namely, Oi Aparadektoi (translated as The Unacceptables) which originally broadcasted on March 25, 1992. The episode that is analyzed meddles in a humorous and sarcastic manner with issues of national identity, the ‘self’ and ‘the other’. Based on Critical Discourse Analysis, the paper elaborates on the way Modern Greek society views its neighboring countries and touches upon stereotypes over the desire of the neighboring countries to claim national symbols and Greek territory and Greek xenophobia. By means of the metaphor of the hungry ‘other’ the neighboring countries of Greece are treated as a ‘topos of danger’ or a ‘threat’ with expansionist strategies. Overall, the study illustrates the collective memory of the Greek TV viewers.
