Abstract

The article discusses the use of metaphors in an educational discourse. it criticizes rote learning of scientific definitions as insufficient indication of how learners understood the scientific concepts they are supposed to learn. The case study focuses on the concept of energy in physics, biology and chemistry and investigates the student generated metaphors of this concept. It stresses that each of these conceptualisations offers a different framework for the understanding of the concept and highlights and hides different aspects of it.
