Abstract

The article challenges the view of metaphor as a property of individual minds and explores the relationship between metaphoric cognition and human social activities. Referring to experimental research in psychology, the author sets out to demonstrate that individual metaphoric cognition is implicitly social. Such an argument, as the author claims, has important implications for the interpretation of empirical findings related to conceptual metaphor and for the long-standing theoretical divide between metaphoric cognition and metaphoric communication.
