Krupa, Viktor. 1993. Anatomical metaphor and its role in vocabulary extension in Indonesian and Maori. 7 pp.

Abstract

Metaphor is based on observed cohesion of the environment in the framework of the Wittgensteinian concept of the metaphysical subject as the border of the world. Primeval cognitive models used for vocabulary extension include anatomical features; a study of their metaphorical usage in Indonesian and Maori consists of a comparison of lists of lexically productive anatomical terms and an evaluation of the productivity of particular terms. Utilization patterns are found to be analogous, with preference for salient body parts - eyes, head, and mouth, in that order. Relations to cognitive universals are suggested.
