Abstract

Results obtained in a series of experiments with Russian children (N unspecified, aged 6-8) are examined for the development of metaphor and nonsense comprehension skills and interpreted in terms of M. Minskiy's notion of frame. It is concluded that (1) the ability to interpret metaphors and nonsense increases with age because it underlies the development of a child's imagination and creativity; (2) in tasks requiring the creation and use of a metaphor or interpretation of nonsense, new frames were created for .the application of imagination; (3) the new frame was created as children utilized a single, specific feature of the new object or situation; (4) the imaginary and cognitive potentials are interrelated as children utilized experience to interpret new objects/situations in light of known objects/situations; and (5) data on metaphor construction and nonsense interpretation by children illustrate the interframe relationships.
