Abstract
The profession of translator is still in its infancy in Africa. The present article first discusses the cultural background of the African translator and the influence of colonisation. Secondly the author examines the built-in linguistic alienation of the African environment, which poses a serious challenge to the African translator. The author concludes with some organizational problems for translation in Africa, mainly focussing on training and employment opportunities.
