Abstract
The aim of the present article is to describe and compare the rhetorical structures of two typical genres produced by the medical discourse community in English and Spanish, adopting a functional approach. The analysis focuses on comparing these structures first intralingually and then interlingually, looking for similarities and differences. The genres chosen are research papers (RP) and their abstracts (RA) for they are typical exemplars of medical text genres.
