Abstract

The Zapatista uprising and its war declaration of January 1, 1994 in Mexico, received an almost immediate international press coverage. The Zapatista communiqués, most of them signed by Subcomandante Marcos, spokesperson of the Zapatista National Liberation Army, became emblematic of a new discourse and a new form of political action. The great rate at which these communiqués were translated into many languages contributed to internationalize a discourse and a movement deemed pioneer in the struggle against globalization. By analysing the strategies underlying the various French and English translations of the Zapatista communiqués, this article attempts to define the role played by translation in the Zapatista action and discourse.
