Abstract
Based on a wider research project, this paper analyzes the specific case of Arabic court interpreters who work in the Spanish criminal court system and, more precisely, it goes into some of the aspects that the literature on court interpreting has identified as closely linked with the role of the interpreter. Taking as a starting point the idea that public service interpreters assume a more active role than would initially be expected, and using a questionnaire-based non-experimental descriptive methodology, this paper covers topics such as language register adaptation, and expansion and omission of information during the interpreting process. The results shed light on whether this particular language combination, i.e. Arabic- Spanish, presents any distinct features when compared to other language combinations.
