Abstract

This empirical study challenges the assumption that instructional texts have less creativity potential than literary texts. The author outlines a cognitively oriented concept of translational creativity, a creativity assessment procedure (product and process oriented) and a creativity calculation procedure. A corpus of 16 translation units from 4 popular-science texts containing literary elements is compared with 8 translation units from 2 instructional texts translated by 5 professionals and 12 students. The creativity potential of instructional texts is revealed to be lower on the product level, while creative problem-solving potential is almost equal. The professionals display a lack of creativity with the instructional texts, which may be due to the fact that they ascribe little creativity, quality and problem-solving potential to these texts. It is argued that the effects of a lack of creativity and, thus, quality may have more serious consequences in instructional texts than in literary texts.
