Abstract
Translation is presented as a discipline enriched by other fields and as having an enlarged vision as a result of such interaction. The author then examines 1) Newmark's typology of translation and adds some more categories resulting from the contact of Translation with Linguistics and Sociolinguistics, and 2) the subfields of interpretation, terminology and machine translation, concluding that translation will have an even more decisive effect on virtually every human activity in the future. With this view, the author points out Costa Ricas's priorities concerning translation in a local basis and according to the country's current national and international needs.
