Choi, Jungwha. 2004. The purpose and role of AIIC- seen from the perspective of AIIC. Journal of Interpretation & Translation Research Institute 8 : 195–214.
Abstract
The International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) was established in 1953. By reviewing the objectives and role of this organization, this paper aims to reaffirm its functions as well as the need to have a link between freelance and in-house interpreters. As an international organization whose main purpose is to protect the rights of conference interpreters, AIIC emphasizes dial interpreters need to have aptitude together with linguistic and background knowledge in order to ensure quality interpretation; and at the same time, they must team interpretation skills at specialized schools in order to become communication experts between heterogenous cultures. Experienced interpreters provide a wealth of information for the newcomers, which will smooth the path for them in the future. They also provide concrete solutions to some difficult situations. Joining the AIIC is a choice every conference interpreter has to make. However, there are many benefits to joining. AIIC provides very useful information which will benefit an interpreter in the long run. At die same time, it provides a sense of camaraderie with other interpreters together with an opportunity to network with other interpreters on the international stage.
