Abstract

Ian Johnston’s translation The Book of Master Mo is one of the few Chinese philosophical classics collected in Penguin Classics. Its great success depends largely upon Johnston’s dynamic use of thick translation. The translation itself can serve as a model of successful employment of thick translation in translating Chinese philosophical classics. The paper first describes the chief forms of thick translation in Johnston’s translation, and then examines the way he comprehensively employs various forms of thick translation, both inside and outside translation, to expound the profound Chinese philosophy in the Mozi, with an attempt to reveal some textual reasons for its success and provide a reference for translating Chinese philosophical classics.
