Abstract
The present paper analyses Cioran’s work through Romanian translation and reception, seen as a metaphorical return to his native country and language. The (self)exile, recurring theme in Cioran’s work, and translation as a productive process are the main axes of this incursion into the Romanian philosopher’s work. The author argues that exile, a self-imposed form of rupture by Cioran that generated a tumultuous reception of his work in Romanian, is resolved through translation in both directions – from Romanian to French and from French to Romanian. Cioran's translation could thus represent the quest for a meeting point between two languages that Cioran perceived as entirely different and incompatible.
