This paper attempts to explore the cultivation of translation engineers through translation engineering education against the background of the rapid development of artificial intelligence and information technology.  Translation engineers are mostly responible for the technological and data-related jobs regarding translation practice and management, i.e., development of translation-related technology, compilation and maintenance of translation data, and technology-supported translation workflow design. Although translation engineering knowledge and skills boast widespread application in the language service industry, so far there has been no university degree program specifically for translation engineering. Aiming to bring together translation skills, translation technology, and data science knowledge, Shanghai International Studies University is running a pilot MA program in translation engineering under the framework of MTI. Pooling together its premium resources in both translator training and language data-related disciplines, the university paves the way for the training of translation engineers with good command of translation technology and data management skills, as well as sound translation competence.
