Abstract
The translation criteria of “faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance” stand for Yan Fu’s initial attempts to get rid of traditional translation experience and intuitions, which marks the beginning of rational explorations of the nature and rules of literary translation in modern translation studies. To date, numerous young scholars have successively explored, discussed, expounded, and publicized Yan Fu’s three-character translation criteria on the basis of the vital space of literary translation unclosed by him, enriching and developing the ideological connotation of “faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance” with a renewal of its vital space. Nowadays, within the scope of modern academic theories and modern scientific methods, a growing body of studies has observed, explored, revised, and even reinterpreted “faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance” from multidimensional and multilayered perspectives, which reflects contemporary scholars’ relentless efforts to pursue the modernization of Chinese traditional translation theories. Rooted in Chinese thoughts and culture, “faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance” is still the seed and leaven of modern translation theories. Additionally, this topic plays a crucial role in achieving modern transformations in Chinese translation theories. Therefore, further studies are warranted to renew its vitality and modality.
