Abstract

Based on Talmy’s theory of lexicalization of movement events, this paper takes Yu Hua’s I Don't Have My Own Name and Bai Yaren’s English translation of "laughter" as examples, aiming to explore Bai Yaren’s creative treason in translation and analyze the causes of these variations. It is found that creative treason in Chinese-English translation is not because translators change the original text in pursuit of innovation, but because of the differences between Chinese and English lexical patterns of movement events. After understanding the lexicalization types of Chinese and English, they sometimes choose verbs with different semantic components to successfully carry out cross-language conversion. In Bai Yaren’s translation, the relexicalized verb "laugh" has a wider semantic tolerance, and its different semantic components show different potential to be integrated into the verb.
