During his lifetime Henri Estienne (ca. 1528–1598) was best known as a printer, as the compiler of the Thesaurus graecae linguae (1572), and for his critical editions of Greek and Latin authors, often correcting earlier Renaissance editions. Today he is best known for his commentaries on the French language, in particular his complaints about Italianisms (Deux dialogues, 1578, discussed in Smith 1983, Cerquiglini 2007, Cowling 2007; Shangler 2015; Sampson 2004) and his contribution to the founding of the remarques tradition, especially the Hypomneses (1582), but also the Precellence (1579) (Demaizière 1991; Marzys 2004; Swiggers 1997; Zollna 2013). The volume under review here connects these two passions of the Humanist scholar.
