During the past two decades research concerning the functions and uses of what Longacre (1976) still called ‘mystery particles’ has developed into an impressive field of its own, resulting in extensive research on pragmatic particles in various languages. Accordingly, by now some of these ‘mystery particles’ have lost some of their mysterious character.
