Grammaticalization and pragmatics

It may not be immediately obvious why the topic of grammaticalization is part of the story of pragmatics. Grammaticalization is most frequently presented in terms of the interface between lexical and grammatical aspects of language, cf. the opening of the introduction to an edited volume on the topic:
