Grounded theory
Table of contents
The Grounded Theory (GT) approach is primarily conceived of as a methodology and/or a set of specific methods for discovering a grounded, i.e. data-driven, theory with regard to structure- and action-bound dimensions of the phenomenon under study. Due to the reconstructive and constructive methods applied in the research process, GT generally is identified as a qualitative approach, although it also has been applied for quantitative research purposes. GT was developed by the US American sociologists Anselm Strauss and Barney Glaser as a result of their collaborative research with Jeanne Quint Benoliel on dying hospital patients (Glaser & Strauss 1965, 1967).
