Індивід, який здійснює переклад, мобілізує широкий діапазон ресурсів, щоб упоратись із завданням. Враховуючи традиційну перекладознавчу термінологію, ці орієнтовані на переклад ресурси розглядаються як складові перекладацької компетентності. Термін « компетентність » позначає сукупність знань, якими повинен володіти (і, за замовчуванням, оволодіти) індивід, аби здійснювати переклад. З психологічної точки зору (див. Психологія перекладу ( Translation psychology )), до перекладацької компетентності входять компоненти різної когнітивної спрямованості, які засвоюються, зберігаються та структуруються у довгочасній пам’яті перекладача.
