Selle uurimisvaldkonna peamine nimetus on „lastekirjanduse tõlkimine”, kuid mõned uurijad eelistavad nimetusi „tõlge lastele“ või „tõlkimine lastele“, rõhutamaks, et teksti sihtrühm on lapsed ning mõeldud pole tekstiliigi tunnusjoont. Lastekirjanduse tõlkimist iseloomustab mitu tunnust. Nende seast pakuvad tõlketeadlastele kõige sagedamini huvi järgmised: (1) kultuurikonteksti kohandamine, (2) ideoloogiline manipuleerimine, (3) kahetine lugejaskond (sihtrühma kuuluvad nii lapsed kui ka täiskasvanud), (4) kõnekeele omadused ja (5) teksti ja pildi vahekord.
