翻訳が、共同作業 (collaboration) であることは明らかである。これは、あらゆる翻訳という営為と、また原著者、出版社、翻訳会社、翻訳者へとつながる一連の翻訳プロセスに鑑みても自明であろう。共同作業は、翻訳者とこのような参与者の間、あるいは翻訳者同士の間で生じる。翻訳プロセスのこうした共同作業の特徴は、翻訳理論における機能主義アプローチ (Nord 1997) でも重視される。この意味での共同翻訳の定義は、一般的には、複数の参与者が何らかの形で (間接的に) 協力し、翻訳物を作成する行為となる。また狭義では、複数の翻訳者が協力しながら一つの翻訳を行うという意味もある。また、共同翻訳という用語はコミュニティー翻訳、ソーシャルネットワーク翻訳、ボランティア翻訳、ファン翻訳、ファンサブ、クラウドソーシングといった概念と密接に関係している。この関係性は、CT3 (シー・ティー・キューブド) という語からも見て取れる。CT3とは、DePalma & Kelly (2008) による造語で、ローカリゼーション分野におけるCommunity Translation (コミュニティー翻訳)、Collaborative Technology (共同技術)、Crowdsourcing Translation (クラウドソーシング翻訳) を示す。共同翻訳は、技術、文芸 (e.g. Agorni 2005; Rosslyn 2001)、ポップカルチャーの分野 (e.g. O’Hagan 2009) などのあらゆる領域で行われる。
