Тлумачі та усні перекладачі жестових мов(signed language) (сурдотлумачі) працюють у різноманітних сферах діяльності, зокрема в правових та інших ситуаціях, яким притаманний правничий дискурс. Право на тлумача під час судового засідання або в іншому юридичному процесі було чітко встановлено кількома законодавчими органами ще з часів підписання Міжнародного пакту ООН про громадянські та політичні права у 1996 році. Тепер право на доступ до тлумача з метою захисту особистих прав сторін у судовій справі є добре задокументованим. Наприклад, Європейський Союз зобов’язує своїх членів надавати послуги тлумачів для вирішення будь-яких правових питань. До того ж, в усьому світі активно лобіюється вимога трансформації положення про надання послуг тлумача на право, а не на питання, що віддано на розсуд органів юстиції (Gibbons & Grabau 1996; Hertog 2010; Laster & Taylor 1994; Mikkelson 2000; Phelan 2011).
