문화번역이라는 개념은 인류학/민속학, 그리고 문화연구/포스트식민주의연구라는 두 개의 광범위한 학문영역에서 온 것으로, 두 영역에서 각기 다르게 정의된다. 우선 인류학에서 문화번역은 문화공동체 구성원이 세계를, 그리고 세계 안에서 자신의 위치를 어떻게 해석하는지를 다른 문화공동체 구성원에게 기술하는 행위를 일컫는다. 반면 문화연구에서는 자신의 문화공동체를 떠나 다른 공동체로 이주한 사람이 수행하는 다양한 형태의 협상(negotiation), 혹은 이주 그 자체를 지칭한다. 두 학문분야의 학자들은 공히 ‘translation’이라는 단어의 라틴어 어원 translātus이 ‘실어 나르다’(to carry accros)라는 뜻의 transferre 동사의 과거분사라는 사실을 언급하는 것으로 이 개념의 설명을 시작한다(라틴어가 아닌 다른 어원을 인용하는 학자는 극히 드물다). 그런데 무엇을 실어 나르는가에 관해서는 학문별로 입장이 다르다. 인류학자들은 다양한 논문과 저서에서 설명된 대로, 자국 독자에게 이국 문화를 텍스트 형태로 ‘실어 나르는’ 것을 문화번역으로 본다. 반면 문화연구자에게 있어서 문화번역이 실어 나르는 것은 문화라기보다는 본래의 문화를 간직한 채 자신의 태생지를 떠나 새로운 장소로 진입하는 사람들이다.
