Культурний переклад (передача культурних особливостей) – це поняття, що має дві конкуруючі дефініції, які походять із двох різних дисциплін, антропології/етнографії (ethnography) та культурології/постколоніальної теорії (Post-colonial literatures and translation). В антропології так зазвичай позначають те, як представники однієї культурної спільноти описують те, як представники іншої культурної спільноти тлумачать світ та своє місце в ньому. В культурології цим терміном зазвичай позначають різні форми перемовин, до яких вдаються люди, яких перемістили з однієї культурної спільноти до іншої, або саме таке переміщення. В обох випадках науковці зазвичай пояснюють використання цього терміну, вказуючи на те, що англійське слово translation (переклад) походить від латинського translātus, яке, у свою чергу, є формою дієприкметника минулого часу від дієслова transferre зі значенням « переносити через ». Однак що саме « переноситься через », залежить від галузі дослідження. Для антропологів іноземні культури « переносяться » домашнім читачам в текстовій формі, як це описується в статтях та монографіях, а для культурологів « переноситься » не стільки культура, скільки люди, які полишають рідні місця та переносять з собою культуру до нових територій.
