Digitaalisia ihmistieteitä ja käännöstiedettä olisi luonnollista lähestyä määrittelemällä, mitä digitaaliset ihmistieteet ovat. Tällainen lähestymistapa on kuitenkin osoittautunut haastavaksi ja myös paljon keskustelua herättäväksi. Digitaaliset ihmistieteet on moniulotteinen, nopeasti kasvava ja jatkuvasti kehittyvä tieteenala, ja siksi sitä onkin vaikea määritellä tarkasti niin, ettei määritelmä vanhentuisi. Artikkelissaan Debates in the Digital Humanities Klein ja Gold (2016: n.p., oma käännös) viittaavat määritelmään:
