Происходящий от древнегреческого слова « ἐμπάθεια », термин « эмпатия » пришел в английский язык из немецкого в начале XIX века (Stueber 2008/2019) и закрепился в значении « понимание чувств другого человека ». При употреблении слова « эмпатия » в повседневном общении на английском языке это, вероятнее всего, первое значение, которое с ним ассоциируется. В более формальных определениях разграничивают аффективный и когнитивный компоненты данного термина.
