Аби вирішити, що дивитися, читати чи купувати, ми зазвичай систематизуємо всі комунікативні події, щоб класифікувати певний вербальний продукт у межах конкретного жанру. Усі дисципліни, наприклад, літературознавство, історія мистецтв, кінознавство, лінгвістика та інформатика використовують поняття жанру чи типу. Потреба дефініції жанру та типів текстів не обійшла й перекладознавство. Розмежування цих двох понять не є новим і досі залишається проблематичним, навіть якщо, дещо спрощуючи, назвати жанри соціально зорієнтованими, а типи текстів – мовно маркованими.
