Tõlkimise ja hermeneutika seos on ilmne. Kui keegi saab ülesande tõlkida tekst ühest keelest teise, on sellise ülesande eesmärk eri kultuuridest pärit inimeste vahelise suhtluse hõlbustamine. Sellega kaasneb arusaamise küsimus. Tõlkija sõnastab lähteteksti põhjal mõistetud sisu ja muutub sihtteksti kaasautoriks, kuid enne lähteteksti tõlkimist peab ta sõnumist aru saama. Selle protsessi peamine mõjur on tõlkija koos oma teadmistega keeltest, kultuuridest, tehnilistest aspektidest ja kirjutamisstrateegiatest. Põhitähelepanu on tõlkepädevusel kui mõistmise ja kirjutamise mõttes sügavalt subjektiivsel nähtusel, ning sellist olukorda on kõige parem analüüsida hermeneutikale toetudes.
