Усний переклад можна класифікувати, виділити в окремі категорії та розбити на певні види та підвиди, спираючись на різні критерії, причому найважливішим з них буде режим роботи. Якщо брати до уваги режим роботи як основу такого поділу, то розрізняють два основні види усного перекладу – синхронний та послідовний. У послідовному усному перекладі перекладач починає передавати текст цільовою мовою після того як мовець робить паузу, тобто перекладач стосовно мовця говорить послідовно, звідси й сама назва.
