記述的翻訳研究（Descriptive Translation Studies – 以下DTS）――多元システム論、操作学派、テルアビブ学派とルーヴェン学派の連携、記述派・実証派あるいはシステム派などと呼ばれる学派、またはベネルクス三国の研究グループなどとしても知られるーーは、記述的・実証的・学際的・目標志向的アプローチによる翻訳の研究であり、文化史における翻訳の役割に特に着目している。このアプローチが初めて展開されたのは1970年代初頭のことで、本格化したのは80年代、急激に発展したのが90年代、そして現在でも「翻訳を文化と歴史の事象として探究し、翻訳のコンテクストと成立要件を探り、今在る翻訳がなぜ在るかを説明できる根拠を調査」（Hermans 1999: 5）しようとする研究者たちに示唆を与えている。DTSは、特にこの研究が登場した初期の段階では文芸翻訳の研究と見なされることが多かったが（「文学研究と翻訳学」の項参照）、その後は技術翻訳、視聴覚翻訳、あるいは通訳といった複数の方面にその考察範囲を広げてきた。
