Mõiste ja termin „sugu“, mis viitab viisile, kuidas eri sugupooled on sõltuvalt ajast, kohast ja sotsiaalsest rühmast kultuuriliselt konstrueeritud, ilmus analüütilise kategooriana tõlketeadusse 1980ndate lõpus. See oli 1960. ja 1970. aastatel esile kerkinud arvukate feminismiilmingute jätk. Ilmus mitmeid olulisi „tõlkimist ja sugu“ puudutavaid raamatuid (Simon 1996, Flotow 1997) ja palju artikleid. 1990ndail omandas mõiste „sugu“ laiema tähenduse, kaasates ka homoaktivismi ja queer-teooria küsimusi ning soo diskursiivse performatiivsuse ideid. Neid aspekte uuritakse nüüd ka tõlketeaduses.
