Äkkiseltään ajateltuna huumori on helppo määritellä. Huumori aiheuttaa huvittuneisuutta ja hilpeyttä ja saa meidät hymyilemään ja nauramaan. Ilmiönä huumorin väitetään olevan ihmiselle ainutlaatuinen: ”pour ce que rire est le propre de l’homme” (”sillä juuri nauru on ihmisen tunnusmerkki”), kuten François Rabelais (1947, suom. Erkki Ahti) asian ilmaisee. Nykytutkimus ei kuitenkaan tue tätä yksinkertaistavaa oletusta. Vaikka huumori on vahvasti sidoksissa nauruun, ei pidä paikkaansa, että sen paremmin huumori kuin naurukaan kuuluisi vain ihmislajille. Huumorin käsitettä voidaankin havainnollistaa analysoimalla sen suhdetta nauruun.
