Länsimaisen filosofian historiassa käännöstoiminta ja sen herättämät filosofiset kysymykset ovat yleensä jääneet lähes täysin huomiotta. Filosofian oppialan ja käännöstutkimuksen suhde nähtiinkin pitkään ilmeisen epäsymmetrisenä: kääntäjien ja käännöstutkijoiden kiinnostus filosofiaan vaikutti paljon suuremmalta kuin filosofien kiinnittämä huomio kääntämisen pulmiin ja kysymyksiin (Pym 2007: 25). Tämä asetelma on alkanut muuttua vasta varsin hiljattain, kun 1900-luvun viimeisinä vuosikymmeninä nykyajattelussa alettiin yhä enemmän tiedostamaan erottamattomia yhteyksiä filosofian ja kääntämisen välillä. On esimerkiksi jopa väitetty, ettei nykyfilosofia näe kääntämistä pelkästään kiinnostavaksi, vaan jopa ”lumoavaksi”, sillä kääntäminen toimii käsitteenä, jonka ehdoilla ”voidaan keskustella filosofian mahdollisuudesta, ellei jopa sen käytännön harjoittamisesta” (Benjamin 1989: 9, oma käännös).
