Mõiste „valjult mõtlemise protokoll“ viitab teatud liiki uurimisandmetele, mida kasutatakse tõlkeprotsessi empiirilistes uurimustes. Andmekogumismeetodit teatakse kui „valjult mõtlemist“ või „samaaegset verbaliseerimist“, mis tähendab seda, et uuritavatel palutakse sooritada ülesanne ja verbaliseerida kõike, mis neil ülesannet sooritades pähe tuleb. Verbalisatsioonide kirjalikke transkriptsioone nimetatakse valjult mõtlemise protokollideks (VMPdeks ehk TAPideks -think aloud protocols).
